Famitsu explains the husky voice and passion for Detective Pikachu's coffee!

The curious spin-off adventure of Pokémon has a peculiar version of the character.


Since its premiere in the West, Detective Pikachu has stunned many fans with a very particular version of the electric Pokémon: instead of being cheerful and screaming, it has a reflective and mature personality, a husky voice and passion for coffee. The Japanese media Famitsu has published an interview -recognized in English in Kotaku- where its responsible explain why this facelift.

Producer Hiroyuki Jinnai explains that the voice of actress Ikue Otani is already well known, but in Detective Pikachu it was necessary for an older man to fit into the theme of adventure and mystery that shapes the game. Something similar happens because of his fondness for coffee: "normally, you would imagine a pipe among the characteristic attire [of a detective], but as you can imagine, in this context we had to reduce it to coffee " explains Jinnai. "[The coffee] is something slightly mature, and it gives it a certain level of style."

Definitely, seeing Pikachu smoking a pipe would not have been a very solid bet for a game like this. Coffee, on the other hand, has given rise to numerous funny moments shared on social networks. Detective Pikachu is now available on Nintendo 3DS.
